Provider taxonomy code

Definition

A provider taxonomy code is a 10-character code from the National Uniform Claim Committee that describes a provider's type, classification and specialty. Providers choose one or more when they apply for an NPI.

What does a taxonomy code look like?

Ten characters, for example a code for a family medicine physician or a licensed clinical social worker. The code set is maintained by the National Uniform Claim Committee and updated twice a year.

Why isn't it enough to know a provider's specialty?

Providers pick their own codes, often once, when they get an NPI. The code may not match what they actually do today. A cardiologist who mainly does electrophysiology looks the same as a general cardiologist.

What helps?

Looking at what a provider actually treats and performs, for example from claims, gives a truer picture of their clinical focus.
