Why does FHIR matter for provider data?
CMS interoperability rules require many payers to publish their provider directories through a FHIR API. The Da Vinci PDex Plan-Net implementation guide sets out how directory data should be structured.
Which FHIR resources describe providers?
Practitioner (the clinician), PractitionerRole (what they do, where and for which network), Organization, Location, HealthcareService and InsurancePlan, among others.
What FHIR doesn't solve
A standard format makes data easier to share. It doesn't make the data correct. An inaccurate directory published over FHIR is still inaccurate.
