Provider roster

Definition

A provider roster is a file a provider group sends to a health plan listing its providers and their details, such as locations, specialties and panel status, so the plan can update its network and directory records.

What's in a roster?

Typically one row per provider per location: name, NPI, specialty, address, phone, tax ID, accepting new patients and effective dates. Each group and each plan tends to use a different layout.

Why are rosters hard to work with?

They arrive as spreadsheets, PDFs or even faxes, in many formats, on different schedules. Plans spend a lot of staff time mapping, cleaning and loading them, and errors in the file go straight into the directory.

How can rosters be checked?

By comparing each row with other evidence: NPPES, licensing records and claims at the listed location. That catches providers who have left the group but are still on the roster.
