Practice location

Definition

A practice location is an address where a provider actually sees patients. It is different from a billing or mailing address, and many providers are listed at more locations than they really practice at.

Why are practice locations so often wrong?

Groups add every clinician to every office on their roster, providers move without telling every plan, and billing addresses get copied into the directory as if patients could be seen there.

Why does it matter?

The location is how members choose a provider and how plans measure network adequacy. A provider listed at ten offices but seeing patients at two makes a network look bigger and closer than it is.

How can locations be verified?

Claims show where services were actually delivered. A location with no recent claims for a provider is a strong sign the listing is wrong.
